Proudly from Juárez, director Rayell Abad presents Lepes, a film that portrays childhood and everyday life in a city marked by contrasts, yet filled with deep humanity. Featuring a fully local cast and a production process that spanned five years, Abad set out to represent Juárez “as it truly is,” with authenticity and without stereotypes.
Supported in part by the federal and state Secretariats of Culture of Chihuahua, Lepes achieved a milestone by becoming the only production from Chihuahua to receive the 2024 grant from the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE). This recognition reflects the growing interest in films made outside Mexico City, where new voices and perspectives are emerging to enrich the country’s cinematic landscape.
The story follows Pedro, a young boy from Juárez whose mother works long hours at a maquiladora. In her absence, he finds refuge in a funeral home and forms an unexpected friendship with Samo, the embalmer who teaches him to see life with tenderness and hope.
“We wanted to show a different Ciudad Juárez—more intimate and human—through the eyes of a child learning to face life with hope and curiosity,” Abad shared in an interview with Carmen Becerra. Meanwhile, André Montaño, who plays Pedro, reflected: “It was a beautiful challenge to portray a boy who experiences such intense emotions, but above all, it taught me to appreciate the small moments of tenderness and friendship in everyday life.”
After premiering at the Guanajuato International Film Festival, Lepes had its international debut on September 27 at the El Paso Film Festival, held at the majestic Plaza Theatre. The event brought together the cast and crew, who walked a red carpet celebrating the talent and creativity of the border region. Border Heritage attended to cover the premiere, sharing the excitement of a night that marked a turning point for filmmaking in Juárez.
Lepes has captivated audiences with its sensitivity, authenticity, and emotional depth. “Seeing how people have responded so warmly to the film has been the best reward after so many years of work,” Abad expressed.

Lepes, Cine Cien Por Ciento Juarense
Orgullosamente juarense, el director Rayell Abad presenta Lepes, una película que retrata la infancia y el día a día en una ciudad marcada por contrastes, pero también por una profunda humanidad. Con un elenco completamente local y un proceso de producción que tomó cinco años, Abad buscó representar a Juárez “como tal”, con autenticidad y sin estereotipos.
Apoyada en parte por las Secretarías de Cultura federal y estatal de Chihuahua, Lepes logró un hito al convertirse en la única producción chihuahuense en ganar el Fondo del Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía 2024. Este reconocimiento refleja el creciente interés por las películas hechas fuera de la Ciudad de México, donde surgen nuevas voces y miradas que enriquecen el panorama del cine nacional.
La historia sigue a Pedro, un niño juarense cuya madre trabaja largas horas en la maquila. En su soledad, encuentra refugio en una funeraria y entabla una inesperada amistad con Samo, el embalsamador que le enseña a mirar la vida con ternura y esperanza.
“Queríamos mostrar una Ciudad Juárez diferente, más cercana y humana, a través de los ojos de un niño que aprende a enfrentar la vida con esperanza y curiosidad”, comentó Abad en entrevista con Carmen Becerra. Por su parte, André Montaño, quien interpreta a Pedro, compartió: “Fue un reto hermoso interpretar a un niño que vive tantas emociones intensas, pero sobre todo, me enseñó a valorar los pequeños momentos de ternura y amistad en la vida cotidiana”.
Tras su paso por el Festival Internacional de Cine de Guanajuato, Lepes tuvo su estreno internacional el pasado 27 de septiembre en El Paso Film Festival, celebrado en el majestuoso Plaza Theatre. El evento contó con la presencia del elenco y los realizadores, quienes desfilaron por una alfombra roja que celebró el talento y la creatividad fronteriza. Border Heritage acudió a cubrir el estreno, compartiendo con los asistentes la emoción de una noche que marcó un antes y un después para el cine juarense.
Lepes ha cautivado al público con su sensibilidad, autenticidad y fuerza narrativa. “Encontrar que la gente ha respondido bien a la película ha sido la mejor recompensa por tantos años de trabajo”, expresó Abad.
