Recently, a group of dear friends from Border Heritage embarked on an extraordinary journey through some of the region’s most beautiful islands. When we asked them to share their experiences, Ruth French stepped up to tell us about the adventure she enjoyed with Gladys González and their close-knit travel group.
It All Began in Puerto Rico
“Our journey started in Puerto Rico,” Ruth said. “It’s our third trip together, and each one somehow outshines the last. What I love most is the freedom to truly be myself. We all respect each other’s space, and when we’re together, it’s pure joy.”
The group’s itinerary quickly grew into a series of unforgettable moments. Among the highlights was their visit to Colombia—a vibrant country that delighted them with its colonial architecture and rich cultural traditions. In the historic neighborhood of Getsemaní, they admired the palenqueras in bright dresses, balancing fruit baskets on their heads with elegance and grace.
A Culinary Revelation
“Colombian cuisine was a true discovery,” Ruth shared. “We ate well everywhere, but Colombia stole my heart. I had a ceviche made with plantain and leche de tigre, served on crunchy tostadas. Absolutely delicious!”
From there, the group continued exploring six more Caribbean islands. Their favorite? Aruba—rightfully called the “Happy Island.” With its constant sunshine, high-quality hospitality, and stunning beaches, Aruba delivered the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. It’s no surprise that TripAdvisor named it one of the best destinations in the Caribbean.
Island-Hopping Wonders
Next came Curaçao, with its colorful colonial buildings and coral reefs teeming with life. Then Saint Martin, where cultures and cuisines blended beautifully. In Barbados, they danced to the rhythm of calypso and enjoyed the nightlife. Saint Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands offered breathtaking views and artisan markets, while Dominica captivated them with its lush greenery and hidden waterfalls.
One detail that truly fascinated them was the variety of beach landscapes. Some shores had soft white sand, while others were dark and volcanic, shaped by natural forces. They even walked on beaches with quicksand-like mud and others that shimmered like glass under the sun.
The Magic of Traveling by Sea
But what elevated the entire experience was traveling by boat. “Sailing made everything feel more relaxed, more magical,” Ruth said. “Watching the horizon merge into each island made us feel like part of something greater. Every sunrise promised a new discovery.”
The Caribbean is known for its breathtaking beauty, but its cultural and linguistic diversity is equally captivating. Colonized by the Dutch, French, and Portuguese, many islands reflect a rich mix of African and European traditions. One beautiful result of that blend is Papiamento—a creole language mixing Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and English.
“Hearing such a vibrant, expressive language spoken with so much warmth was an unforgettable moment,” Ruth added.
A Journey That Connects the Soul
More than the landscapes or the languages, what left a lasting impression was the people. Every island welcomed the group with kindness and generosity.
“Each conversation was special,” Ruth reflected. “Each smile made us feel at home. These connections are what truly make travel meaningful.”
In the end, this trip was far more than a Caribbean vacation. It was a journey of discovery, friendship, and deep connection—an experience that strengthened their bond and filled their hearts.
“Traveling through the Caribbean—especially by boat—means immersing yourself in stories, flavors, and cultures that stay with you forever,” Ruth said. “Every island had its own soul, and that’s what made each stop unforgettable.”

Recientemente, un grupo de queridas amigas de Border Heritage emprendió un viaje inolvidable por algunas de las islas más hermosas de la región. Cuando les pedimos que compartieran su experiencia, fue Ruth French quien entusiasmadamente relató la aventura que vivió junto a Gladys González y su entrañable grupo de amigas.
Todo Comenzó en Puerto Rico
“La aventura comenzó en Puerto Rico”, contó Ruth. “Es la tercera vez que viajamos juntas, y cada experiencia supera a la anterior. Lo que más valoro es la libertad de ser yo misma. Nos llevamos muy bien: cada una respeta el espacio de la otra, y cuando nos reunimos, la pasamos increíble.”
El itinerario pronto se convirtió en una cadena de momentos inolvidables. Uno de los más destacados fue su paso por Colombia—un país vibrante que las sorprendió con su arquitectura colonial y sus ricas tradiciones culturales. En el histórico barrio de Getsemaní, admiraron a las palenqueras con sus vestidos coloridos, llevando canastas de frutas en la cabeza con gracia y orgullo.
Un Descubrimiento Gastronómico
“La cocina colombiana fue una revelación,” compartió Ruth. “Comimos bien en todos lados, pero fue aquí donde realmente me enamoré de la comida. Probé un ceviche hecho con plátano y leche de tigre, servido sobre unas tostadas crujientes… ¡una delicia!”
Después de Colombia, el grupo exploró otras seis islas caribeñas. Su favorita fue Aruba—conocida como la “Isla Feliz.” Famosa por su clima cálido, sus excelentes servicios turísticos y sus playas de ensueño, Aruba ofrece la combinación perfecta de descanso y aventura. No es casualidad que TripAdvisor la haya reconocido como uno de los mejores destinos del Caribe.
Islas Que Sorprenden
Siguieron hacia Curazao, con sus edificios coloniales de colores vivos y sus arrecifes llenos de vida. Luego llegaron a Saint Martin, donde se mezclan culturas y sabores. En Barbados, disfrutaron del ritmo del calipso y de una vibrante vida nocturna. Saint Thomas, en las Islas Vírgenes de EE.UU., las sorprendió con paisajes panorámicos y mercados de artesanías. Por último, visitaron Dominica, una joya natural con vegetación exuberante y cascadas escondidas.
Algo que les llamó especialmente la atención fue la variedad de playas: desde arenas blancas y suaves hasta costas volcánicas oscuras moldeadas por la naturaleza. Incluso caminaron por playas con lodo parecido a arenas movedizas y otras que brillaban como cristal bajo el sol.
El Toque Especial: Viajar en Barco
Pero lo que hizo que el viaje fuera aún más mágico fue recorrerlo en barco. “Navegar lo hizo todo más relajado, más especial,” dijo Ruth. “Ver cómo el horizonte azul se fundía con cada isla nos hacía sentir parte de algo más grande. Cada amanecer era una promesa de nuevas sorpresas.”
El Caribe es conocido por su belleza escénica, pero su diversidad cultural y lingüística es igual de fascinante. Muchas islas fueron colonizadas por holandeses, franceses y portugueses, lo que dio lugar a una rica fusión entre tradiciones africanas y europeas. Un claro ejemplo es el papiamento—una lengua criolla que mezcla español, portugués, holandés e inglés.
“Escuchar este idioma tan colorido y expresivo, acompañado de tantas sonrisas cálidas, fue una experiencia profundamente enriquecedora,” agregó Ruth.
Un Viaje que Toca el Alma
Más allá de los paisajes o los idiomas, lo que más las marcó fue la gente. En cada isla, las recibieron con hospitalidad, generosidad y cariño.
“Cada conversación fue especial,” reflexionó Ruth. “Cada sonrisa nos hizo sentir en casa. Esas conexiones son lo que realmente le da sentido a viajar.”
En resumen, este viaje fue mucho más que unas vacaciones por islas paradisíacas. Fue una experiencia de descubrimiento, de amistad profunda y de conexión humana—una aventura que fortaleció lazos y dejó recuerdos para toda la vida.
“Viajar por el Caribe—especialmente en barco—es sumergirse en historias, sabores y culturas que te alimentan el alma,” concluyó Ruth. “Cada isla tiene su alma, su encanto propio, y es justamente esa diversidad lo que hace que cada parada sea inolvidable.”
